Bir Billing Paragliding History

Bir Billing is a paragliding site located in Kangra, Himachal Pradesh, India. It’s situated at an altitude of 8,000 feet above sea level and is considered to be the world’s 2nd best paragliding site. Bir Billing Paragliding take-off area was first recognized for paragliding by a group of pilots from France in 1978. They were amazed by the strong thermal columns and the beautiful landscapes of Kangra Valley and the Dholadhar mountain range.

Alain Gaymard was the first person to do paragliding in Bir Billing in 1980. He flies on the Dholadhar mountain.

The first paragliding championship, the All-India Paragliding Championship was held in Bir Billing in 1988. The event was held successfully and attracted many international paragliders from all over the world.

Ajit Bartakke, an Indian Army officer was posted at Palampur In Himachal Pradesh In 1980. He highlighted the importance and potential of this valley for paragliding and conducted several paragliding camps and workshops in Bir Billing. He wrote many articles and did lots of press releases to highlight the paragliding activities to per mote the paragliding to attract national and international tourists.

Bir Billing got a chance to host the paragliding world cup 2015 in which over 150 pilots from 28 countries participated in this world cup. After that Bir Billing has become a popular paraglider destination for paragliders from all around the world.

In 2015, an 18-year-old named Kalpana Dewangan was the first female who successfully completes a solo paragliding flight in Bir Billing.

The longest paragliding record in India is made by Sagar Dhage, who managed to fly a total of 180 km in a single flight over the course of 8 hours and 29 minutes.
